Path to the House Above the World

The path up to the House above the World is steep - it begins in

olive-trees and ends in olive-trees.

Between them, there is a kind of landing which is followed by a grey wall

covered with obscene figures and political slogans.

Then there are more olive-trees, blue patches of sky between the

branches, and the smell of the gum-trees bordering reddish fields in

which purple-yellow and orange cloths are spread out to dry.

After a good distance, there is a little blue gate, an overhanging patch

of bougainvillea tendril, and then a stairway which seems as steep as a

ladder, but is drenched in cooling blue shade.
