The Child Inside
A child asked me
If I could sing her a gay little ditty.
I said that I would if I could
But I don't sing well.
So I would read her a story
Of kings in castles
And maidens in distress.
But her eyes were sad and she said no, that's okay,
Those stories always bore her.
A child asked me
If I could take her to the zoo to see the lions.
And I said I would if I could
But my schedule was tight.
So I would take her to a park
Where she could play on swings
With other children for awhile.
But her eyes were distant and she said no, that's okay,
Maybe some other time.
One day I found time to spare
And asked if she would like to come out to play.
Perhaps she would if she could
But she was nowhere to be found.
So I went alone to the zoo,
Sang a gay ditty to the lions,
And asked them to be my friends.
But there were tears in my heart for they were too busy playing,
And couldn't hear my song.
